"It is remarkable how closely the history of the apple tree is connected with that of man."
-Henry David Thoreau
On July 20, 2013 thousands of Portlanders gathered at Hoyt Arboretum in Washington Park to try to set a new world record for the largest number of people hugging trees in a single location.
I am proud to say that I was one of those thousands of treehuggers!
Arriving at 2 pm I wandered over to the long line.
The lady in the orange vest reassured us all that these things take some time... frightening children in the process.
Luckily, I had pre-registered and was able to get in there pretty quickly.
Once I got through the entrance, there were a few tents representing tree-friendly organizations (unfortunately no food).
But there was a man in a tree suit!
We decided to climb up the hill a bit and get away from the hustle and bustle of people.
By 2:40 we had separated into our different groups and picked out our trees to hug. We had some time to kill so here are some awesome pictures of Danny:

After waiting for another half hour we finally gathered around our trees around 3:15 and hugged for one whole minute! I am actually pretty impressed that these people managed to coordinate 951 people in an hour and fifteen minutes. Yea, that's right Portland will set the world record for the most amount of people hugging trees in a single location with 951 people after Guiness processes the whole thing (which could take months). But take that Pakistan! (who was our competitor according to the announcer)
